Propeller balancing is a critical process, especially for aviation, ensuring the stability and efficiency of aircraft operations. The Balanset-1 portable balancer and vibration analyzer has emerged as an effective tool for dynamically balancing aircraft propellers in field conditions. This device has been instrumental in several aircraft, including the Yak-52 and Su-29 models, where its capabilities were put to the test during recent projects.

The need for propeller balancing arises from the inherent dangers posed by imbalanced propellers, which can lead to increased vibration, reduced performance, and potential mechanical failures. Effective propeller balancing with tools like the Balanset-1 enhances the safety and reliability of the aircraft while extending the lifespan of various mechanical components.

Our company commenced the manufacturing of the Balanset-1 device two and a half years ago, producing over 180 units utilized across diverse industrial applications. The results were promising, showcasing a decrease in vibration magnitude from 10.2 mm/sec to an impressive 4.2 mm/sec, significantly improving aircraft performance.

Furthermore, tests conducted at varying operational modes illustrated the positive effects of propeller balancing and its ripple effects on overall aircraft vibration across several frequencies. The reduction in vibration levels, confirmed by sequential ground tests, emphasized the importance of accurate propeller balance for optimal aircraft functionality.

Subsequent work involved the MTV-9-K-C/CL 260-27 propeller of the Su-29 aerobatic aircraft. Initial tests indicated existing vibrations and highlighted the need for balancing. Implementing the Balanset-1 device once again proved fruitful, as the initial balancing efforts resulted in a reduction in vibration from 6.7 mm/sec to 1.5 mm/sec at the propeller rotation frequency of 1350 RPM. This substantial decrease reaffirms the Balanset-1 device’s effectiveness in achieving desired balancing results.

The methodology applied in these projects—specifically focusing on the natural frequencies of aircraft components—proved crucial in ensuring the propeller rotation frequency was selected to maximize detuning from the aircraft’s resonant frequencies. Continual vibration monitoring using the Balanset-1 can also facilitate diagnostic assessments, aiding maintenance teams in identifying issues before they escalate into more significant mechanical failures.
